What makes horses effective in therapy?
Horses are highly intuitive and sensitive to human emotions, responding to nonverbal cues such as body language and energy. Their honest, immediate feedback helps clients gain insights into their own behaviours and feelings. As social animals, horses naturally seek connection and trust, mirroring the dynamics of human relationships.
Working with such large and powerful animals can also build confidence, improve emotional regulation, and encourage effective communication and problem-solving skills. This unique dynamic make horses incredible partners in the therapeutic process.
Does this therapy involve horse riding?
No, this therapy does not involve horse riding. Instead, all interactions with the horses take place from the ground.
Clients work alongside the horses in a safe, open environment, observing and engaging with them in a way that encourages personal insight and emotional growth.
Working with horses from the ground allows clients to focus on the horse’s natural behaviours and responses, which provide immediate, honest feedback. This dynamic can help clients reflect on their emotions, communication styles, and problem-solving approaches in a unique and impactful way.
This ground-based interaction also makes equine-assisted therapy accessible to individuals who may not feel comfortable riding or have no prior experience with horses. The emphasis is on creating meaningful connections rather than physical activity, ensuring the benefits of the therapy are inclusive for everyone.
